Teacher Overview Page

Welcome to this "21things4students" project-based site, funded by grants from the Michigan REMC association.

Help by Registering that you are using these resources

Picture
*** Please help us track the use of these resources***
**If you didn't click the link on the Home page for "Teachers Register Here"
1. To help us document the use for continued funding and revision work
2. To provide feedback
3. You can indicate your willingness to participate in a follow-up study
4. You can volunteer to provide suggestions, additional lessons, and resources to use in our revision next summer

Teacher Pages: There is a teacher resource page for each of the 'things' listed
on the menu at the left. A button like the one at the top of this page is on the top of each
page and will take you to the teacher page for that particular 'thing.'
Standards alignment: We have aligned the activities provided here to the
National Education Technology Standards for Students (
NETS-S) and Michigan
Educational Technology Standards (
METS) for secondary
school grades at this time.
Authors: The resources on this site have been developed by teacher-educators, classroom teachers, and instructional technology specialists working for Intermediate School Districts across Michigan, USA. The goals of this project (2010-12) and pilot period (Jan 2011-May 2011) have been to:
  • Improve proficiency for Michigan students in grades 6-12, in meeting the METS and National NETS standards.
  • Provide 21st century resources which are engaging and fun for teaching and learning with educational technology for teachers and their students using performance-based activities based on 21st century educational technology tools such as: Google Docs, spreadsheets and graphing, digital citizenship, copyright, presentation tools, etc. (See the web site)
  • Provide just-in-time and project-based resources online which increased opportunities for authentic portfolio-based assessment of educational technology literacy skills in 6-12 grade levels.

Site revisions in process to be released August of 2012

The 21things4students design team is hard at work building a new version of this site. We treasure all the feedback provided by the students and teachers using these resources (over 6,000 comments and suggestions!).
Improvements will include: Quests and missions. There will be a more "kid-friendly" look and feel, more videos and interactivity, a more game-like approach (with points, badges and achievement levels), less text on the page (broken down more -chunked); more audio options for listening to the introductions and directions are also being added in. The web links and lessons are being updated and/or revised with the addition of some of the activities contributed by the educators using this site.  Thank you again all for your suggestions and comments. List of Web sites used for these projects

Click the button at the left to access the complete list. We have created a spreadsheet (growing) which includes every link we are using for student activities, teacher lessons, as well as the content on the main pages.

Site Orientation

Our group selected '21' areas to focus on which are important for a 21st century learner. Each of these project pages includes a link to a teacher resource page. This was refreshed during the summer of 2011 based on feedback from students and teachers.
**** The Teacher Pages contain additional resources and information. The Teacher Pages are linked to by clicking the teacher icon at the top of each main 'thing' page.

Activities

Picture
One each page we have provided a set of activities which we hope engage your students and are fun to do as they learn to use the different tools we are featuring.

There are additional Student Activities which are linked to by buttons on the pages similar to the one on the left. These are modified or are new activities which three of the pilot teachers using these resources have created or modified (thanks to Kathy Campau, Scott Husken, and Renee Jorae) along with our project team members.

Access to Google document Student Activies from your School District

Please check with your technology director to make sure your district allows documents from outside the district to be able to be opened. The Student Assignments we have linked to using the buttons shown further down this page are all shared globally from Google. If your district blocks the access, then you will need to do the following:

1.  Request access from your districts technology department.
2. If gmail/Google Docs is only available within your district then the teacher can access the document and save a copy of the document within your own system and provide a link to their own google Doc document for the students.
3. If gmail/Google Docs is not available within your district then option 3 would be for the teacher to Open it from another location, and save it as a .pdf file from Google and then to upload the file to the local server for student access.

NOTE: If you find you need the student activities as pdf documents, please email us and we will convert them and make them available on a separate page. email to: 21things4students@remc.org

Create, Modify and Share

If you wish to modify the lessons, they have been created in Google as view
only, however you can use the File menu and Copy the lesson, creating a copy,
and then modify it to meet your own needs. We encourage you to do this, and if
you want to share them with us to add in the next revision we encourage you to
share your Student Activities with us. Please email us at
mailto:21things4students@remc.org.

Directions for copying, editing, modifying and contributing your own student activities & teacher lesson
plans is on a Share Lessons page.
Click the button or here to access it.

Feedback and Evaluation

We really want your feedback, suggestions, and evaluation of our 21things4students project, and this includes the suggestions, ideas, and evaluation by students as well. You are invited to provide feedback using the Feedback button near the bottom of the things menu on the left. This is a moderated blog, so your comments and suggestions will not appear immediately.

Assessment Rubrics (under revision) will be added to the page at a later date.

Picture
We have included some information about assessment, a template of the rubric we have used, and removed the majority of the rubrics we had on this site. Many of these rubrics are now out of date and will be replaced at a future time.
