Staying Organized

Teacher Page
You’re at your best friend’s house.  You’re on their computer and want to show them an awesome site you discovered; however, you can’t remember the web address and your Google search isn’t finding it.  If it would have been saved to your delicious site, you could have found it in just a few clicks.

Why use delicious or diigo for saving, organizing,
 and sharing web sites?

1. I can't remember or find a web site. You can't find a site when away from your computer. Have you ever saved a link to your computer at school or home and then been at another computer and wished you could find and use this website? You can access a web site you've bookmarked to your online delicious account from any computer in the world with Internet access. For those who prefer diigo, here is a lesson and guide on diigo with the activities included.

2. Crash! I lost everything! What if your computer crashes and you've lost all the bookmarks or favorites stored on your computer? When you save your bookmarks to delicious, they are stored online, in the "cloud."

3. I can't remember all my passwords. You have so many different user names and passwords, they are hard to keep straight. Sites saved to your delicious site can be marked as private.  These sites are only visible to you when you're logged into your delicious account.  When you bookmark a site to delicious, you can include notes about the site (or reminders about your user name/password.)

Things to notice when visiting delicious:
  1. Tags are listed down the right-hand side. These are 'categories' assigned by the user.
  2. Clicking on any of these tags will take you to a page showing the web site links saved with that tag.
  3. Notice the numbers in dark blue above  each web link? These show how many other users on the delicious site also saved the same link.
  4. See how each of the web site links shows the tags (categories) assigned to them. These are single words separated by a space (such as Adobe pdf free freeware...).
  5. Save link! That is located just above the tags, but can only be done by the registered user when signed into the account.
  6. You won't see any sites a user has marked as Private unless you are logged into your account.
  7. Check out the latest feature which is a Stack. It is collection of links built around a common theme. Click on "Create Stack" , choose at least 3 links, add descriptions, pick your favorite images, choose the layout and shuffle the order of the links. When you have completed this, click publish to share your Delicious Stack.

Activities

We have provided an activity for either diigo or delicious.

Delicious Activity:  Create an account in http://delicious.com/ and install or use pre-installed Delicious buttons or bookmarklets to save a minimum of 10 sites to your delicious account. For each saved site, use 4 or more different tags appropriate for the site. When you save a site, include in the description field a two to three sentence description that describes the resources available on the site. With all your sites showing on your Delicious page, take a screenshot and paste it into a Word or Google document. If you already know about RSS feeds you can use the Delicious RSS feed and post it into a web or blog site.
