ScreenCasting

Picture
Teacher Page

Have you ever been asked . . .

"How did you do that on your computer?"

Wouldn't it be great to be able to create and send a quick "how-to" video so they can complete tasks on their computer, too?

Picture
There may be times when you wish you could capture your computer screen to show others
  • How to do something
  • Or to provide more personalized feedback
  • Or maybe something isn't working and you need to get help
You can create a short screen recording to show the problem!

“Show me” videos can be extremely helpful for learners.

With free software, you can quickly and easily capture
  • Your computer screen
  • A photo or graphic
  • Anything else to which you may want to add an arrow or "call-out"

You may also create a video of the steps easily and make it available for others to see online, or share via email and text.

Activity

Use any of the suggested online tools (or another that you have used) to create multimedia content that can be shared on the web to give others information or teach a process.

Individual or small group
  • You have been selected as the class “Daily Scribe.”
  • It is your job to create a screencast tutorial to demonstrate to others how to do today’s math problem, science problem, or demonstrate some other process or cycle learned in class.
  • Develop a simple script and storyboard.
  • Using a simple drawing tool such as Paint, and a screencast application, like CamStudio (which you can download free), or web-based app Jing (also a free download), record a simple screencast that can be put on the class website to show what you learned today. (See mathcast examples below for more ideas.)

More Ideas . . . .
"Every time I go to a movie, it's magic, no matter what the movie's about."  - Steven Spielberg

 Sample video creation ideas:
  • Music video set to school fight song.
  • Re-enactment of significant historical event
  • Constitutional argument - pick an admendment and create a video arguing for or against the admendment with video or images to justify your position
  • Create a slide show of images from web set to a poetry reading

Getting Started with Jing
You don't have to be Spielberg to make a quick video of your computer screen.  The picture on the left links to a Jing tutorial.  Jing is an online screen capture tool that makes it really easy to capture what you want to show and share it online.

If Jing is blocked at your school, below is a PDF handout for downloading and using CamStudio, a screen capture app that works right from your desktop.

Here is a PDF document with some steps for getting started with CamStudio.  If you want to use an online screen capture tool such as Jing or others mentioned in Additional Resources below,  there will be plenty of tips and tutorials on the site to get you started!
