Powerful Presentations

Showing what you know digitally -it's your turn to shine

Picture

There are a lot of ways to create a presentation.

Have you ever started yawning during a presentation? What makes up a 'great one'?

One that keeps your interest.

There are lots of presentation tools out there. Some are free on the Internet (ex. Prezi, Glogster, VoiceThread) and others are available on your school's computers (ex MS PowerPoint or OpenOffice Impress). Learn how to dazzle your audience with some new Web tools. Avoid a slow, painful, and boring presentation such as "Death by PowerPoint" by learning to use some cool new tools!

Have fun watching this "PowerPoint Mistakes" posted on SchoolTube by comedian Don McMillan
Let's start with a new tool which is called Prezi.

Prezi is a free online presentation tool created by Adam Somlai-Fischer and Peter Halacsy in 2007.

Like many, they felt their current slide based presentations limited their ability to be creative.
As a result they created Prezi and officially launched it in Budapest in April 2009.
Prezi allows users to zoom, add images, create a story line and then present and share the information online.
To view a sample of what a Prezi presentation looks like go to this link: http://prezi.com/explore/

Prezi and Relevant Video Tutorials

  • Go to the Prezi site and begin by watching the tutorials. There are three lessons beginning with a step-by-step tutorial listed below.
  • Lesson 1 - Step-by-step getting started basics
  • Lesson 2 - Grouping and Layering
  • Lesson 3 - Quick tips on presenting and publishing
  • Begin thinking about what class you will create your presentation for. If you are having a problem deciding, watch this "Sweet recipe to solving problems" prezi by Adam Somlai-Fischer. There are quite a few more exemplary examples on the Explore page.
  • Be sure to identify your primary goal - or big idea. What do you want the 'audience' to learn or know after watching your presentation. Check out the 9 Presentation Tips for Students.

Getting A Student Prezi Account

Get a student account with Prezi. Apply by clicking this link. Note that you will need an email account, or your teacher may register and set up student accounts. Remember to get permission from your teachers to use Prezi to produce a two to three minute presentation on a topic that will result in a grade.

This is a free program online that lets you create interactive posters, which is another way to present your ideas and work.
