Have you ever taken a digital picture and wanted to remove an imperfection from it, such as red eyes or a distracting background? Have you ever seen a digital image on a website that you knew wasn't a "real" picture, and wondered, "How did they do that?" Or would you just like to add some interesting effects to a photo you are going to use in a project to help deliver a message?  Digital images are easy to manipulate without buying expensive software. Adobe Photoshop is a well known choice for those that need high end editing features and are willing to buy the product,  but you don't have to purchase anything to produce exciting digital images for your projects. Many online editing sites will edit or even animate your photos at no cost!
ACTIVITY:

1.  Visit at least three of the digital imaging websites listed below. Choose one you would like to try out for this assignment. Note that some of them will require you sign up for a free account to use them, so make sure you follow your teacher's instructions about creating an account.
  • Picnik is an easy to use photo editing site. Here is a link to some tutorials for Picnik. NOTE:  Picnik is closing down on April 19, 2012. It is recommended you use one of the sites listed below. This announcement will remain on this page until the revisions are done in summer of 2012.
  • PicMonkey  Tutorials from the web (How to make a collage)
  • Fotoflexer:  Demos and tutorials can be found here.
  • Picasa is a photo sharing site as well as a site where you can do photo editing. On this tutorial page, scroll down to the section on "editing photos".
  • Lunapic: Click on the "tutorial" tab to learn how to use different effects, or just upload a photo and jump in!
  • Paint.net: If Paint isn't already on your computer, you can get it from this site. Here are a few video tutorials and a good YouTube video series on how to use Paint.
  • Photoshop Express can be downloaded from this site. If you are interested in using Photoshop in the future, this might be a good starting place for you.

2. Visit one of the sites listed below to find an appropriate image to download for use in this activity. These sites have FREE images that you are allowed to use for projects at no cost as long as you cite your source (see "Citing Sources" on the Information Literacy page). You might want to bookmark these sites these on your Delicious or Diigo page for future use.

3.  Follow the steps below to finish this activity. (NOTE:  If you are using an electronic portfolio on a site such as Weebly, make a page for Digital Images and place the work you do on your activity there).

A. Take a "BEFORE" screenshot of your image and save it.
B. Use one of the FREE digital editing tools listed in #1 above. Upload your image and edit it using at least three of the tools in the program.
C. Take an "AFTER" screenshot of your image when you are finished with it.
D. Put the BEFORE and AFTER images into a document. Write a short paragraph that explains each of these:

  • the name of the website where you found the image
  • what website you used to edit the image
  • what tools or features of the website you used to do your editing

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY:

Use one of the sites listed below to create a digital slideshow using digital photos you took or images from one of the free sites listed above. All of these links require you to sign up for a free account, so be sure to follow your teacher's directions regarding account creation. Share the link to your project with your teacher.
