Q.4 Clickbait

Buyer Beware

This just in! Breaking news! You don't want to miss THIS!

Clickbait cat

Introduction

How many times have you fallen for a pop-up advertisement or an eye catching link that prompts you to read on? This is called clickbait and it is often paid for by the advertiser or generates income based on the number of clicks. The content is often not true, but more of a bait and hook for people browsing the Internet.

Key Vocabulary

Clickbait: Clickbait is content whose main purpose is to attract attention and encourage visitors to click on a link to a particular web page.

Degrade: To degrade is to deteriorate and make inferior or less desirable.

Fraudulent: Fraudulent is the crime of using dishonest methods to take something valuable from another person.

Malware: Malware is software that is intended to damage or disable computers and computer systems.

I Can Statements

  • define clickbait
  • identify clickbait and refrain from clicking on it

Steps

1. Clickbait can actually be harmful. It is almost always age-inappropriate for kids. It can be harmful to your computer by giving it a virus, spreads misinformation and fake news and it degrades everyone's collective experience of the Internet.

Some things to watch for: (from Common Sense Media)

  • Headlines -  Any bold claims, such as "You won't believe what happened next," are red flags that a story is clickbait.
  • Weird GIFs - Animated images that illustrate something unusual and that lure you into investigating are usually invitations to scams.
  • Make-money-at-home schemes - Anything that promises you can make money by not lifting a finger is fraudulent.
  • Enticing photos - Scantily clad bodies, diseases, distorted images -- these are all clickbait and lead nowhere good.
  • Sales -  Whatever you've shopped for recently often turns up in your social media feed or on your Google search results.
  • Contests and gimmicks -  Slogans such as "Share this!" or "You've Won!" tend to lead to more clickbait -- and they may harbor malware.

Create Your Own Clickbait

2. You are going to create your own clickbait. You will add a photo and a headline that will lure others to click on your image.

3. Use the photos from this Google Drive album which are all public domain for your use in this project. Download a photo from the album or another teacher approved site to use in Fotoflexer.

4. Go to Fotoflexer.com and upload a photo. You will not have to create an account to save your image.

3.  Next go to Decorate on the Fotoflexer menu and there are two different ways to add the headline text to your image.

Fotoflexer Text

  • Go to Text or Glitter Text and type in the text and place it where you want it on the image.
  • Another choice is Poster. Go to Poster and type the text below the image.

4. Next save your image to your computer. Upload the image to a shared location such as Google Docs. (Your teacher will share the location with you.)

5. As a class view the class created clickbaits and discuss how clickbaits lure online traffic and how online users can avoid taking the bait and hook.
